Klaus Teuber's acclaimed classic returns in a new format. Catan Cards is the portable version of the prestigious strategy, resource management, and trade title that challenges us to develop and expand a settlement on the island of Catan. In this edition, designed for 2 to 4 people ages 8 and up, players also compete to reach 10 victory points, but they do so without rolling dice. The rules are very intuitive; you'll be playing in no time! To set up the game, the first thing to do is remove the corresponding cards if there are fewer than 4 players. Shuffle the raw material cards (rock, wood, grain, wool, and clay) and form a deck. Set aside the building cards sorted by type (road, settlement, knight, and expansion) and the destination card with the white arrows showing (only in games for 3 or 4 players). Next, set up a central market with 5 commodity cards visible to everyone and a hand of 3 cards to each player, which remain hidden from the rest. Finally, all players take a road card, a settlement card, and the cost summary, which they place in their play area. On their turn, each player may perform three actions in order: trade, build, and steal resources. In the trade phase, they can exchange resources from their hand with the stock pile, the market, or other players, depending on the number of roads with their A-sides up. In the construction phase, they use resources to expand their settlement with roads, settlements, cities, and city expansions, or to hire knights. If they want to build a road or a knight and the central pile is empty, they will take the card from the player closest to them in the direction indicated by the destination arrow. Just like in the board game, beware of thieves! In the final phase, players draw the top two cards from the resource pile. For each knight card they have with the A side up, they may draw one more card. Some city expansion cards grant additional benefits; just read the printed text and apply them. Since victory points are always visible on the bottom of the cards, you'll know which players are ahead. Catan Cards maintains the essence of the original board game, with the added benefit that its format allows you to experience it anywhere. Ideal for travel and impromptu games, it will be your faithful ally in casual get-togethers with friends and family. With a second copy of the game, you can expand the experience to 5 or 6 players without changing the rules. Simply add the resource cards and adjust the building cards to your number.
